ステンレスと鉄。
木との融合で得たそれぞれの気づき
鉄は丈夫で、長く使えるし、すべて再生可能なので、サステナブルな素材。そういった鉄の特性を伝えながら、素材の可能性を追求し続けている。溶接のバランスや木と組み合わせなど、デザイン通りの軽やかさを表現するために、このベンチには職人の手作業でしかできない技術や手間がたくさん詰まっている。それは目には見えないし、むしろ見えないようにすることを大切にしてきた。いろんな素材と組み合わせてものづくりをしているなかで、やはり木などの自然素材が一番合うと改めて感じた。絶対的な理由があるわけではないが、やはり五感で感じる木の質感の気持ちよさは、ケミカルな素材には敵わないと思う。

ステンレスは錆びにくく、不変的な素材。時間が経過しても変わらない一方で、木材は時間とともに変化していく。膨らんだり縮んだりする木という素材とステンレスを組み合わせて、接地面がぴったりとはまり、5つの支点を浮きなく仕上げるところは難しかった。動くものと動かないものという、異素材同士を組み合わせることで、製造上気をつけることはあるが、そこが興味深い点でもある。どういう形でお互いを引き立てるか、今回のプロジェクトを通して、ポリシーを持ったものづくりのおもしろさを改めて感じた。このベンチから、自然の時間の経過をこれからも見ていただければと思う。

Stainless steel and iron
Insights gained through their fusion with wood
Iron is a strong and durable material that can be used for a long time, and it is also fully recyclable, making it a sustainable material. While conveying these characteristics of iron, we continue to explore the possibilities of the material itself. In this bench, many techniques and processes—possible only through the hands of skilled craftsmen—are embedded in order to express the lightness envisioned in the design, from the balance of the welding to the way it is combined with wood. These efforts are not visible; in fact, we have always valued making them invisible. Through working with many different materials, I have once again felt that natural materials such as wood are the most compatible. There is no single absolute reason for this, but the pleasant texture of wood that we experience through our senses is something chemical materials simply cannot surpass.

Stainless steel is highly resistant to rust and remains stable over time. While it hardly changes as the years pass, wood continues to transform. Combining stainless steel with wood—which expands and contracts over time—made it difficult to ensure that the contact surfaces fit perfectly and that all five supporting points were balanced without gaps. When combining materials with such different properties—one that moves and one that does not—there are many things to consider in manufacturing. Yet that is also what makes it so interesting. Through this project, I once again realized the fascination of creating things with a clear philosophy: considering how different materials can complement and elevate one another. I hope that through this bench, people will continue to witness the passage of time in nature.
