ABOUT

“OBJECT⇄FOREST” is a project that uses timber from selective thinning carried out for forest conservation. By connecting national and local governments, forestry workers, and production/processing manufacturers, it creates public furniture and brings it into people’s daily lives. Set in Ishiro Forest in Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture, and carried out with the cooperation of Shinshiro Kikkorys and production/processing manufacturers such as Karimoku Furniture, this project weaves a story while confronting the many challenges surrounding the forest—from human resources and funding to the quality of the timber. We propose stools and benches carved from whole logs, incorporating materials that rarely reach the market—such as insect-bored (“wormy”) wood. These were designed by the project’s director, Ryota Yokozeki. We place importance on building the living stories of forest stewardship and craftsmanship through engagement with many different people, so that in familiar public settings, people can touch wooden furniture, feel the appeal of wood, and learn more about the forests at their source. We hope this project will bring people together, deepen understanding of forests, and ensure that necessary resources continue to reach the places where they are most needed.
